Aquacycling: what for?
Pedalling at a steady rate on a stationary bicycle means that the lower body’s most important dynamic muscles (gluteals, quadriceps, hamstrings, etc.), which thus use the most oxygen, are continually working. This leads in particular to the stimulation and strengthening of the cardio-respiratory system, and the burning of calories.
But, in the air, this type of bicycle is not suitable for everyone since it is very hard on the joints and quickly becomes tiring. As a result, it is often abandoned.
This is not the case with the aqua-bike, because of the many advantages offered by the water:
- almost weightless conditions. In water you feel weightless since your body weight is reduced by 4/5ths
- warm water (28-31°) is relaxing and stimulating, the heart rate is reduced by 10%, and the heart can rest
- the hydrodynamic resistance of the water provides a gentle counter-force to the pedalling. Only acceleration increases energy expenditure, exertion can be controlled easily, movements are regular, without articular impact or muscular contraction and with no stress
- combined with movement, the hydrostatic pressure, which acts equally on all parts of the body, produces a draining massage that accelerates the elimination of toxins from muscles. Lactic acid, which is responsible for the sensation of fatigue, is immediately evacuated in the venous circulation – see the scientific articles -
